When paid social narrows, 360° opens: building a media mix beyond ads
In markets where gambling advertising is tightly restricted, affiliates already account for 6 to 11 percentage points more of player acquisition than in markets with lighter rules, according to industry estimates. The pattern is clear: when paid channels narrow, budgets move. Brands that depend on a single channel lose scale every time a platform or a regulator changes the rules.
The scenario
Platform rules for regulated categories keep getting stricter. Since April 2025, Google has required certification, a dedicated responsible gambling landing page and operation only in approved countries for gambling ads, with suspension without warning for serious violations. Rules on social platforms also vary from one country to the next and change frequently.
Regulators are moving in the same direction. In Brazil, a bill approved by a Senate committee in September 2026 proposed restrictions on advertising across broadcast, outdoor, streaming, games, esports and retargeting, before the market itself was suspended by a provisional measure.
What it means
A media plan built on one or two paid channels is fragile. A single policy update can cut reach overnight, and the cost of rebuilding it is high. A mix that combines several fronts spreads that risk and keeps the funnel active even when one channel closes.
The key is that each front has a different role. Out-of-home and sponsorships build awareness and credibility. Creators and live streaming build trust and consideration. Affiliates and owned channels drive conversion. Comparing all of them with the same metric leads to the wrong decisions.
How to react
- Map your current dependency. Calculate what share of acquisition comes from each channel. Anything above half from a single source is a warning sign.
- Assign a role to each front. Define which assets work for awareness, which for consideration and which for conversion.
- Combine assets that reinforce each other. An ambassador who appears in an OOH campaign, a live stream and creator content creates a consistent presence across touchpoints.
- Check local rules before planning. Sponsorship, outdoor and in-game advertising are allowed in some markets and restricted in others.
- Measure each front on its own metric. Awareness, engagement and conversion should be tracked separately and then read together.
- Use organic to warm up paid. Content that already performs organically is the best candidate for paid amplification when the channel allows it.
How we approach it at Smart Social
We work as a one-stop shop for media. Beyond our network of more than 1,000 creators, we run campaigns that combine ambassadors, sports and esports teams, events, out-of-home, live streaming and in-game activations, in more than 25 countries.
This lets our clients plan a single strategy with several fronts, adjust the mix when a market changes and keep delivery stable. The same operational capability serves brands outside iGaming that face their own advertising restrictions and need more than one channel to grow.
